All About Us
Our school, St. Conleth’s NS. is situated in a rural area in North Galway. St. Conleth’s is the larger of the 2 schools in the parish and is situated in the village of Kilconly. Our school is named after Conleth the patron saint of the parish. Conleth is reputed to have been a follower of Beningus who founded the monastery in Kilbannon at the other end of our parish. He constructed a small church, probably of wood in the locality, hence the name Kilconly “Cill Chonla”, church of Conleth.
During 1976, 3 small rural schools in the parish, Castlegrove, Brooklawn and Tobberoe were amalgamated and replaced by the current central school of St. Conleth with a staff of three teachers. At the time of the amalgamation the enrolment was approximately 100. This rose steadily during the eighties and eventually peaked in the early 1990’s with an enrolment of 159 and a staff of 5 mainstream teachers. Since then the numbers have declined somewhat. Our current enrolment is 104. We have 5 mainstream teachers, and two S.E.N. teachers.
