Physical Education
All classes are taught 6 different PE strands
Curriculum:
As part of the Active School Flag process, the staff at St. Conleth's reviewed the current status of Physical Education across the school. We ensured that all pupils are provided with a minimum of 60 minutes of timetabled PE per week and that all classes are taught at least 5 different PE strands each year, using the PSSI and PDST lesson plans and resources.
Various staff members have undertaken CPD in PE within the past 12 months, and all new ideas, knowledge and strategies have been shared among all staff. We have also chosen to prioritise one particular strand each year to be further developed. This year we are focusing on the Gymnastics strand. Teachers also commit to setting active homework. A sample of different active homework ideas can be seen in the document below.
Athletics:
On our initial application of the Active Schools Flag process, Athletics was chosen as our focus PE strand. It really led to the Athletics strand being embedded more in St. Conleth’s N.S. Since choosing Athletics as our chosen PE strand, St. Conleth’s has participated in the Galway Primary Schools cross-country event every year, an event all pupils thoroughly enjoy preparing for and practising their running skills for!
To ensure that our enthusiasm for athletics prevails, one of our chosen fundamental movement skills to focus on was running. Aswell as engaging with content from the Move Well Move Often resources, pupils also put their running skills to the test through various organised activities such as daily running breaks & Run Around Europe challenge. Take a look at some pictures below to get a taste for the athleticism present in St. Conleth’s.
Outdoor and Adventure- Active Walkway:
In St. Conleth’s N.S our Active Walkway route continues to be a big hit with all of our classes! Pupils continue to enjoy putting their exploratory skills to the test through a variety of curricular integrated tasks incorporating the strand units; walking and orienteering also. It continues to facilitate all classes with some fantastic outdoors learning opportunities throughout the school year. Take a look at some active learning which has taken place on our Active walkway route!
Dance:
The Dance strand came into full force during Seachtain na Gaeilge where the pupils took part in a ‘Céilí Mór’ on our school yard. All pupils performed a dance sequence to accompany the Irish song ‘An Dreoilín’. Our wonderful Active Schools committee led the dance for us all! Each class also prepared Shoe The Donkey dance to perform also. The pupils learned that when it comes to dance, practice makes perfect, but having fun is important also! Take a look at our dazzling dancers in action!

Games:
In addition to the variety of games being taught in PE lessons, St. Conleth’s NS are involved in team sports with school teams for hurling and football. Training has taken place for football, hurling, camogie and soccer during the pupil’s yardtimes. The senior pupils, in particular have been busy competing in a variety of leagues within GAA (Cumann na mBunscoil league and GAA tournaments for local schools). We were very proud of our girl’s senior team here in St. Conleth’s who won the shield cup at the Cumann na mBunscoil final last year. Well done girls!
We also hosted our own soccer blitz last year. Our 6th class girls were the winners of our girl’s blitz. Well done ladies! Thanks to Kilshanvey Utd. for allowing us to use their grounds and all the other local primary schools who took part.
Aswell as participating in the more traditional games, our pupils in St.Conleth's N.S like to try their hand at games they wouldn't usually play or participate in. We were delighted to welcome members of the Tuam Falcon's Hockey Club who gave all our pupils a taster session of hockey! The children thoroughly enjoyed it!
Gymnastics:
Gymnastics was our focus PE strand this year. As well as our pupils engaging with content from PSSI and PDST resources, some pupils also followed the Sports Education Model while developing their balancing and travelling skills. They thrived in their designated roles of fitness coaches, coaches, fair play monitors and equipment monitors. One of our chosen fundamental movement skills to focus on was balancing. Take a look at some of the balancing sequences that some of our pupils created!

Aquatics:
Our pupils from 3rd-5th class get the opportunity to partake in a block of swimming lessons in Tuam Leisure Centre. This usually takes place in Term 1 on Thursdays. Our children get to learn and develop new swimming strokes and techniques. They really enjoy it!
Aswell as this our school complements the Aquatics strand by teaching our pupils the land PAWS programme (Irish Water Safety). Check out how proud our 3rd & 4th class pupils were to receive their PAWS certificates on completion of the programme this year.
P.E. Equipment:
Earlier in the year, the Active Schools Committee carried out an audit of our PE equipment. Old and broken equipment was thrown away and new equipment was ordered to ensure pupils in St. Conleth’s N.S experience a wide range of PE activities. Our PE store room was cleaned and all equipment organised into clearly labelled boxes. Our Active School equipment monitors check and make sure that the store room is kept clean and organised each week.
